Why The New York Times Should Stop Complaining about The Huffington Post

Jim Bankoff

Jim Bankoff has held a series of lofty perches that allowed him to watch the evolution of digital content. In the late 1990s he was president of a leading browser company, Netscape, and he rose within AOL to become executive vice president for programming. Bankoff left the company when he believed it was not focusing sufficiently on content and later briefly served as a consultant to Arianna Huffington and Ken Lerer as they developed The Huffington Post.

More recently, Bankoff led the expansion of a new online network of sports blogs called SB Nation. It casts aside traditional notions of journalistic objectivity to build instead on the passion of fans for each major sports team. More than 20 million people visit its 300 sites every month. Bankoff is CEO for the network, which is moving into new areas such as gadgets and technology.

For all that, Bankoff hails the worthiness of such publications as The New York Times; in this chapter, he challenges news executives to recognize the value that aggregators create as well.
